NT project wins two national accolades at 2007 PMAA

A 12 metre tear isn’t good in any situation, let alone 30 centimetres above a freighter’s water line.

Technicians and repair crews from Regional and Northern maintenance services (RANms) were able to repair the damage to MV Provider quickly and effectively and in doing so, earned two national accolades at the 2007 Project Management Achievement Awards (PMAA) held in Hobart on Tuesday night – the Australian Small Project of the Year and the prestigious Chief Judge’s Special Award.

MV Provider, a fully loaded 277 metre Singapore-based cargo ship, was sailing from its home port to when the vessel struck a coal barge off the Indonesian coast. The RANms team in Darwin was charged with fixing the freighter and avoiding the costly proposition and delays associated with it returning to . The entire project was completed in just 58 hours before MV Provider again set sail for .

“This work would have taken twice as long and would not have been as well done in ,” said Gurjit Singh, fleet manager with NYK Ship Management which owns MV Provider. “The workmanship is such that it will pass the [required] 6-month inspection and may be considered a permanent repair.”

Upon MV Provider’s arrival in Darwin, the ship’s crew estimated the tear to be 9 metres long. Further evaluation found the damage significantly more substantial and closer to 12 metres with full hull penetration, damage to the structural ribs and tank ingress. This dramatically changed the scope of the repairs including a requirement for more than 180 metres of continuous fillet welding to a standard that passed survey.

Under the direction of project manager Chris Woolley, RANms personnel worked around the clock to finish the job, minimising docking costs of $50,000 a day, ship downtime and potential penalties for it not arriving at the destination in time.

“There was so much cooperation between all the players in this project,” said John Emslie, Northern Territory ’s PMAA coordinator, noting the diverse group of contractors who came together at such short notice. “You’ve succeeded any time you can bring in a project and get it completed on time.”

RANms is a client, technical and project management firm in Darwin working predominantly in the defence, resources and maritime industries. It is owned by 10 local companies and has access to more than 40 local contractors to support its operations.

The Australian Institute of Project Management (AIPM) organises the PMAA to recognise excellence in project management in each state. All state and territory PMAA winners then proceed to the national finals which are held as part of AIPM’s annual conference.
