Australian Institute of Project Management

The Project Manager Feb/Mar 09 Presidents Message

Strategic thinking is envisaging where we want to be and then working out how we can get there, using the optimum processes or actions that will achieve our objectives. As we commence this New Year, we will aim to be strategically effective in implementing our 2008-2011 Strategic Plan, acting with enthusiasm, diligence and confi dence to deliver on the plan. As a result of the great efforts of our Board, staff and volunteer members last year, we have now significantly strengthened our Institute, placing us in a solid position to move our plans forward. In brief, in addition to local matters—including development of our Knowledge & Research Council, professional development, events, and so forth—we are focusing on our international strategy to open up a range of opportunities to the AIPM in areas we have not previously explored:

• We are currently in discussions with the International Project Management Association (IPMA) to determine if there is benefi t to our members for us to commence some form of relationship, or perhaps co-membership;

• We are exploring the possible refl oating of the Asia Pacifi c Federation of Project Management (APFPM) under the Chair of the AIPM for several years until it becomes a sustainable entity in its own right;

• We will potentially internationalise our Competency Standards as we have received many global requests for its use. Additionally, the further development of the standards this year will include a new Executive Level Standard.

In spite of the ubiquitous economic crisis, we intend to continue to grow our membership, applying a range of innovative strategies that will help us achieve this important objective.

As we roll out our plans over the next few months I will provide regular updates on how we are progressing.

Wishing you a great New Year,

Dr Bill Young

National President
