The Project Manager - April/May 09 Message from President
2008 represented a year of substantial change for the AIPM: • Several new Board members • New leadership in our National Office • A complete shake-up of our organisation and its governance processes. These changes have already made a substantial difference in how we go about our business, our motivation, and our confidence in terms of future sustainability. Although buoyed by the excellent progress made over the past 12 months, the AIPM is adjusting to the world’s worst fi nancial crisis in modern times, a crisis fundamentally caused by mismanagement and lack of effective governance of funds, financial processes and structures in the USA. Not discounting the unquestionable downside of the enormous pain and impact this has had on people’s lives, such a crisis further highlights the crucial need for the delivery of real value through effective project management. As project management professionals, we should aim to avoid getting swallowed up in all the doom and gloom and instead be beacons, helping to rebalance and sustain business growth. Project managers, just about more than any other profession, have the tools and skills to make a difference. As the Federal Government has recently announced a large stimulus package to try and reduce the impact of the contagious global recessionary malaise, we endeavour to infl uence a greater adoption, recognition, and deployment of project management best practices. We initiated a project late last year to work more closely with both federal and state governments to help more extensively to infuse project management best practices in government-based work. Though many projects in the private sector have slowed or stalled, we need to be fl exible about changing our practices, and work locations, to match the economic environmental conditions. There is more need than ever to be innovative and flexible in our thinking so we grow richer and stronger from the challenges that confront us. Dr Bill Young Return to The Project Manager |
