June/July 2009 Presidents Message
Projects typically strive to make money or deliver value for their customers through venturing out with innovation, ingenuity and bold new business goals. This invariably involves exposure to risks that can undermine the desired end result. Delivering what we promise and navigating through all the risks can present a substantial challenge. For the project manager, the adventure can be both exciting and stressful. The current unprecedented economic crisis—caused by bad decision-making and greed—has adversely affected projects globally. In turn, this has affected project managers who are invariably the money managers for their projects. In this recessionary environment there is now even more pressure to deliver the planned outcomes for the best financial value. The stressful part is when various risks come to fruition and managing the available money becomes seriously tight. When these situations arise, project managers need to maintain their integrity and not bend specifi cations or fi nancial rules to give a false impression of progress compared with the initial objectives. As professional project managers, our fundamental goals should be to deliver real value to our customers through informed and effective decision-making and always on a solid foundation of truthfulness and integrity, regardless of whether it hinders or favours us. This has to be the only way we do business and the way we represent our profession. On other matters, as outlined previously, the AIPM has considered expanding its reach and infl uence onto the international stage; we have successfully negotiated membership of the International Project Management Association (IPMA). Being linked in as a key member of this reputable international body will bring a wide range of opportunities to AIPM members. Our annual review of the AIPM Strategic Plan 2008–2011 has been completed and improvements incorporated. We are tracking very well on achieving what we set out to accomplish. The latest revision can be reviewed on the AIPM website (www.aipm.com.au). Dr Bill Young National President |
