The Queensland Transplant Tissue Service is a benchmark project for the processing of donor tissue for surgical transplant. It is an ISO Class 5 (ISO5) world’s best practice facility and an Australian first at this standard. The $12.3 million facility houses the Queensland Bone Bank (QBB) and other future tissue banking services.

A purpose-built, two-storey, 2056 m² building, the new facility is located at the Queensland Health Pathology and Scientific Services campus. The complex also provides improved office, and secure archive and administrative facilities for documenting donor tissue and recipients.

Processing donor tissue in ISO5 clean rooms minimises the potential for contamination and requirements for product irradiation. The processing area provides ISO8 change and cleaning areas, ISO7 scrub and preparation facilities, an ISO6 anteroom for controlled entry to the three ISO5 laminar flow clean rooms, with full environmental control monitoring and recording of temperature, humidity, air flow and partial contamination.

The Queensland Health Capital Works Branch, on behalf of the QBB is the Project Director, with Project Services engaged as the Project Managers and Principal Consultants.

The project team implemented effective project management strategies throughout the duration of the project, such as:

  • Steering committee meetings to provide approvals for scope, quality and cost;
  • User group meetings to establish functional process requirements and spatial relationships;
  • Value management studies to test scope, quality and cost; and
  • Computational fluid dynamics modelling to test design assumptions against key project objectives and standards.

A one-team approach has been fostered in the procurement of this world’s best practice and Australian first donor transplant tissue processing facility. Project Services and the project team are proud to be associated with this innovative benchmark project.
