As millions around the world watched the Opening Ceremony, the culmination of many years spent planning and building became a public reality. It was with the aid of a faultless technology environment that the world joined in with the Games.

In early 2005, Australian Project Consulting Services (APCS) were successful in being awarded the contract for Systems Integration Services of technology infrastructure across all competition and non competition venues for the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games (M2006).

The solution involved full systems lifecycle, design, build, deploy and support of all necessary equipment for the Games Data Network. This enabled thousands of people, including Games officials, volunteers, athletes, providers, contractors, local and international media, real-time access to a broad range of technology services. Furthermore, for the athletes, it provided contact with their families, friends and supporters around the world.

The Games were declared a great achievement for Melbourne, with APCS contributing to this success by integrating IT infrastructure to deliver a first class service, within budget and meeting all non-negotiable deadlines along the way.

The planning and implementation was complex given a large number of stakeholders. A large number of volunteers and employees needed to be brought up to speed at different stages. The management of the project remained sufficiently flexible to cover a large number of risk and contingency areas while meeting the absolutely immoveable objectives of high quality and schedule.

APCS broke down the entire project into small chunks to control, monitor and deliver the implementation effectively and efficiently.A hallmark of the project was the special off-site lab where all components were staged and rigorously pre-tested.

The key to the project’s success was the comprehensive planning and rigorous testing regime that started more than a year earlier. To achieve the reliability and performance objectives, the final product needed to be of comparable quality and robustness of any large scale permanent technical infrastructure.
