In 2005, Australia significantly increased its Army commitment in Iraq. This included a sizeable contingent of the Australian Light Armoured Vehicle (ASLAV).The vehicles that were sent to Iraq needed to undergo some modifications to optimize them for the mission to be undertaken. This also needed to take into account the problems created for vehicle operations by the local conditions in Iraq. All this project work had to be done very quickly and under difficult circumstances, with much of the installation work being conducted in Iraq or Kuwait. This required significant project management and engineering effort. The ASLAV Program embarked on three projects to manage the required modifications. All these programs required significant industry involvement and even required civilian contractors to move to Kuwait. The Industry response to Commonwealth requirements was excellent and was a credit to everyone involved; Defence, General Dynamics Land Systems – Australia (GDLS-A) in Adelaide and Armatec.Despite all the challenges of this enhancement program, overall, the entire process was completed on time, to specification and within budget.Army, the end user is happy with the end result and it has enhanced the ASLAV contribution to Australian operations in Iraq. This has had a significant impact on mission success and troop safety.
