The Advanced Air Defence Simulator, acquired under Project Land 19 Phase 2B, enhances the effectiveness of Ground Based Air Defence Detachments by providing a leading edge immersive simulator for individual and group training and assessment of Ground Based Air Defence detachments. The system simulates multiple aerial targets, missiles in flight and allows a full engagement sequence to be assessed. The system recreates a simulated battlefield environment with noise, smoke, dust, weather and ambient lighting effects.

Prior to the introduction into service of the Advanced Air Defence Simulator, training and assessment of a Ground Based Air Defence detachment in the full sequence of an engagement was only possible with a live missile firing.Individual operators were trained to guide a missile by tracking a non-representative aerial target projected by a weapon simulator against a wall. Tactical controllers were trained during field exercises and radio exercises in barracks. All of these methods lacked the required realism and feedback.

The project scope included the construction of a purpose-designed building and the integration of two separate simulators. A major challenge was the integration of software and hardware from two major international defence contractors.

The inevitable slippages in a project with such a demanding schedule led to an added step in the project described as “provisional acceptance”.This was done to support Army’s scheduled training while a successful work off plan was implemented to satisfy all requirements.

The result for the 16th Air Defence Regiment is a simulator that is a dramatic improvement in individual and collective training and assessment of Ground Based Air Defence detachments. The impact is greater operational effectiveness.
