Global Pacific Services Pty Ltd (Global Pacific) was engaged by Sunbeam Corporation Pty Ltd (Client) in July 2003, as the Project Manager and Superintendent for the remediation of the former Sunbeam site at 60 Charlotte Street, Campsie, NSW.

The soil and ground water across parts of the site were found to be contaminated with high concentrations of volatile halogenenated compounds (VHC), primarily trichloroethene (TCE) and petroleum hydrocarbons principally through historic spillages / leakage of solvents and hydrocarbon fuels used in the manufacturing process on the site. The soil contamination extended off site into an adjacent public road (Troy Lane) and residential properties.

The site was declared to be a remediation site under the Contaminated Land Management Act 1997 as it posed “significant risk of harm” to the environment and potential future occupants in its current contaminated state.

Global Pacific, through a Voluntary Remediation Agreement (VRA) with the NSW Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC), developed a remediation approach and site specific cleanup criteria reflective of the need to address the ongoing groundwater contamination and protect the future occupants of the site and the neighbouring residents.

This project required innovative project management, management & coordination of a highly skilled multidisciplinary team, development & implementation of new remediation technologies & processes and community relationship management that led to the rapid remediation of the site.

The remediation was completed in accordance with the VRA, and accepted by DEC in late 2004.
