The Geelong ‘B’ Zone Substation (GB) supplies electricity to one of the main industrial areas in the Port of Geelong area. The substation’s existing control room located in an old Power Station building, has been a target for vandalism creating a risk to the operation of the Powercor Network. A project for $1.8M was approved to relocate the control room and its functionality to a new building inside the adjacent substation switchyard at the Geelong ‘B’ Zone Substation (GB).

The new control room building was designed and constructed by ETSA Utilities in Adelaide. On completion it was transported by road to the Geelong site where it was placed on its new foundation in readiness for the interface to the existing substation yard. Preparation works on site included the installation of new cables to all existing plant items throughout the yard.

This project was a “first” for Powercor given the constraints, risks and complexities that were required to deliver a project of this magnitude. Maintaining supply reliability was a key performance indicator for the duration of this project in addition to completing this sensitive and complex transition from the old control room to the new control room.

The Geelong “B” Zone Substation now features the latest protection technology and is the first site connected to Powercor’s new optical fibre network.

The GB Control Room Project was completed on time and prior to the end of December 2005, costs were within the controllable budget and Practical Completion was certified by the Network Planning Group. Some of the project highlights include the development of new technology, synergies developed between ETSA Utilities and Powercor and the first time a project of this type had been completed by Powercor Australia Ltd.
