President's Message

Man’s mind stretched to a new idea never goes back to its original dimensions

- OLIVER WENDELL HOMES

The first half of 2007 has been a busy time for the NT Chapter; The AIPM-NT membership has grown by 37% this year which demonstrates the tremendous growth within the NT Industry Sectors. As I stated in the October/November 2006 The Project Manager magazine:

These are exciting times to be a member of the AIPM in the Northern Territory, the optimistic vibrancy of its industries is contagious

The AIPM-NT PMAA 2007 was Launched on Wednesday 21 March 2007at a late afternoon function at Kantilla’s Restaurant, Marrara Football Stadium. The guest speaker was Andrew Farley, Commercial Operations Manager for the AFL NT, who spoke about the long-term project to bring the Tiwi Bombers football team into the NTFL. The Sponsors for this function were Raytheon and GHD, both of whom took out advertising space in the one page feature, which ran in the NT News on Friday 23 March.

PMAA - NT 2007 has three Sponsors

  • Gold Raytheon Australia Pty Ltd
  • Silver Thinc Projects
  • Bronze GHD Pty Ltd

The AIPM National Council Meeting was held in Sydney 26-27 May 2007 during this meeting the new executive level of Project Management was discussed, initial work has identified that Executive PM is not competency-based assessment the assessment at this level will be based on peer review by a panel.Executive PM includes contextual elements and behavioural elements, based on findings of research of all existing standards and references. At present the only entry pathway to ExecPM is through RegPM.The current RegPM standards (levels 4-6) are presently being updated and refined.

At this meeting a Motion was passed by the board where the Project Management naming of levels were changed from Qualified Project Practitioner to Project Practitioner (Reg PP); from Registered Project Manager to Project Manager (RegPM); and from Master Project Director to Project Director (RegPD)

It was also decided at this meeting to accept the tabled Guide to Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for RegPM Renewal which will be rolled out to members on the 1st July 2008.

I am please to say that progress has been made with the nomination of the Council candidates from SA, TAS, QLD, NT and VIC for the new Chapter Affairs Council which is being chaired by the AIPM-NT.The first Chapter Affairs Council meeting by teleconference will be convened in July 2007 with a report to be submitted at the next National Council meeting.

The AIPM National Council as part of its International strategy, has formed an International Council to develop a strategic business case for proactively managing the AIPM expansion into Asia. This business case will be presented in draft at the next National Council meeting by the International Council Chairman Bill Young (VIC).

The future venues for the AIPM National conferences are:

  • 2007 National Conference – Hobart:
  • 2008 National Conference – ACT, planning started.
  • 2009 National Conference – Adelaide

And the great news for the Northern Territory is………… the 2010 National Conference –DARWIN has been pencilled in by the board, to be held in the new harbour side Convention Centre that is scheduled to open in mid 2008!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the AIPM-NT members for their support in 2007.

Responsibility for Chapter Affairs Council

As mentioned in the President’s Report, earlier this year, the Northern Territory has responsibility for the Chapter Affairs Council at the National level. As the name indicates, this Council will consider the way that State and Territory Chapters operate with a view to standardising and further developing operating procedures. This will include the roles of the Chapter Coordinators who will be involved in the process.

Earlier this year, AIPM moved to a change strategy based on a seven council structure, with each Chapter having responsibility for a council.

The other six councils are

  • Recognition
  • Communications
  • Membership
  • Industry Corporate
  • Research and Knowledge
  • Governance

Our NT winner will then go on to represent the Territory in the National Awards, which will be announced at the Conference in October.

Thanks to our generous sponsors for supporting PMAA in the NT.
