The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) within the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government investigates transport safety occurrences and improves safety for aviation, marine and rail transport. Each year the ATSB receives around 12,000 aviation safety occurrence reports. The ATSB formally investigates about 100 of these occurrences. The ATSB also investigates a smaller number of marine and rail safety occurrences. The objective of the Safety Investigation Information Management System (SIIMS) project was to: ·introduce a new investigation process; and ·support fundamental organisational change. The new system has delivered a 50% improvement in efficiency for recording occurrence notifications.Other benefits include ·a more structured approach to analysis of safety factors which links investigation outcomes to source evidence; ·support for the ATSB to move from paper based management of investigation information to a secure electronic information repository; and ·Cleansed legacy data and a simplified occurrence classification system providing increased confidence in data analysis for ATSB research. SIIMS was delivered within budget, has been well accepted and has resulted in significant improvement in the ATSB’s efficiency and effectiveness.
