The Greater Access Program was a program implemented from 2005-2008 to integrate all Lifeline Centres across Australia. The national focus of the project was to link 42 centres on 56 sites to increase access for callers to the 13114 crisis telephone counselling service.
At Lifeline Canberra we decided that we needed to ‘lead the change’ in our centre rather than have to reactively manage the change. We formed a Guiding Coalition of about 10% of our volunteer Telephone Counsellors, staff members and Board members. Over the next 3 years, we lead a transparent and clear process of change that included: collaboration with those impacted by the change; provision of additional staff resources to support the process internally; internal appointment of a project manager to ensure that the momentum of consultation and collaboration would not be lost; sharing of information to all counsellors as soon as it became available; and structural modification to the Lifeline Canberra call centre to ensure OH&S was best practice; and high level individual support and training to our counsellors.
