The Australian Government following the Bali bombings and the Boxing Day Tsunami approved the acquisition of C-17 Globemaster III Aircraft and the development of an Aero-Medical Evacuation (AME) capability comprising of High Dependency critical care equipment, consumables and medical integration and platform integration items.

The AME Project was endorsed with $3.57m budget and due to operational needs the AME delivery was required within 8 months.

The project required design acceptance under three Technical Regulation streams being Army, Air Force and the Therapeutic Goods Act.

The C-17 aircraft power supply is 110V where the Australian standard is 240V. The AS NSZ 3551:2004 for technical management for medical devices is limited to 240 V equipment. Many more physical incompatibilities were identified by no design flexibilities were possible for the commercial off the shelf medical equipment.

AME suppliers have differing standards of manufacture, test, training, support and regulation to that require in Australia.

Implementation was successful and the C-17 AME capability has since undertaken many AME missions within Australian and Internationally.
