In December 2005, the Victorian Government made a decision to relocate the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) headquarters from Melbourne to Geelong. This was the largest relocation project ever to be undertaken by a Victorian Government organisation. The relocation was estimated to provide an ongoing economic benefit to the Geelong region of $59 million per year.
The TAC Geelong Relocation Program was highly complex and large scale. Not only did the program encompass the construction of a new, state of the art and environmentally sustainable building, it also focussed on the transitioning of the workforce to Geelong. Tremendous efforts were made to create programs to assist employees in relocating to the Geelong area; training and mentoring the 'right' project resources; retaining corporate knowledge as well as recruitment of new staff.
After 3 years of hard work and investing in the right people for the project, the relocation was a complete success. The TAC achieved occupancy of their new Geelong building and became fully operational as scheduled. Furthermore, a significant percentage of the workforce has been retained.
In addition, the TAC was able to successfully relocate to Geelong while maintaining record levels of client service, a remarkable achievement.
