Project Description

The Sydney Conservatorium of Music and Conservatorium High School is a shared campus for music education, jointly operated by the Department of Education and Training and the University of Sydney.

From 1915, the conservatorium has been housed in one of Australia's oldest buildings - the Francis Greenway designed government stables. The pre-existing accomodation and performance facilities were in poor condition, cramped and inadequate by current standards for teaching, practice and performance. The campus had been split between two sites for more the 25 years due to lack of space.

DPWS was engaged by Department of Educaton and Training (DET) in mid 1995 to study a range of potential sites to accomodate the Conservatorium. In August 1996, the Premier of New South Wales asked the Minister for Educaton and Training to undertake a more detailed assessment, in conjunction with the relevant authorities and stakeholders, to review the appropriateness of the existing site as the location for the Conservatorium. DPWS was also engaged for this assessment. In April 1997, approval was given to redevelop the existing site at the then estimated cost of $69m (Feb 97$) with a revised handover in time for first semester 2000.

The project scope was progressively modified and ultimately comprised refurbishment of the historic Greenway building, including the Verbrugghen hall with a seating capacity of 530 and construction of approximately 24 000 square metres of floor space in four levels, much of this below ground. The new building has been designed as a series of publicly accessible terraces which increase the area of the Royal Botanical Gardens and restores the form of the original stables building. It provides the following accomodation:

  • a music workshop with a seating capacity of 250
  • a performance and assembly hall seating 250
  • two 150 seat recital/lecture halls
  • 130 studio and practice rooms
  • music technology rooms
  • a library, high school classrooms
  • laboratories and specialist teaching spaces
  • administration and staff facilities.

The project was handed over for occupation in early July 2001 for a final cost of $144.6m.
