Peter Dechaineux joined the Royal Australian Navy in 1953, retiring in 1993 with the rank of Commodore. For most of the last twenty years of his naval career he was engaged in managing shipbuilding and major equipment projects.

Subsequent to his naval career Peter has been involved in a wide range of project related activities, mainly associated with Defence projects.

He was co-author of the 1996 National Competency Standards for Project Management.

Peter is a Fellow of the AIPM. He established the ACT Chapter and was the Chapter President form 1987 to 1991 and served as the National President from 1991 to 1993.

He was appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia in 1984.
