Continuous Professional Development (CPD)

for RegPM Recertification

What is CPD?

Continuous Professional Development (CPD) is the process by which a professional person maintains the quality and relevance of their skills throughout their working life.

In 2003 the AIPM National Council introduced a recertification period of three years to ensure the proficiency of certified RegPMs.

Since 2005 AIPM has required recertification of RegPMs every three years from the date of the initial certification. From 2006 onwards the date of certification has been printed on RegPM Certificates for reference.

In 2006 AIPM announced that recertification for its RegPM Members should be in keeping with other Professional Institutions that rely on CPD to make sure their members are practicing and up to date professionals within a competitive global environment. The CPD Committee was formed and has since established a simple yet comprehensive process for AIPM Members to maintain their RegPM status.

From 1st July 2007 until 30th June 2008 an amnesty enabled recertification via either an assessor or collection of CPD points or a mix of both. This amnesty has now expired.

CPD = Currency and Competency

As the body of knowledge within the Project Management profession develops, some have argued that “the only real source of sustainable competitive advantage is the ability to learn faster than the competition”. Hence AIPM see it as important for our Members to retain currency of knowledge and to participate in ongoing development to ensure capability to deal with emerging and challenging project issues.

The key features of effective CPD are:

  • Continuous – operates throughout the practitioner’s working life
  • Professional/Organisational focus - necessary for the execution of specialised technical duties and related to maintaining the quality and relevanceof expert services
  • Broad Based – development of knowledge, skills and personal qualities
  • Structured - systematic maintenance, improvement and broadening of the person’s skill base

From their original RegPM assessment Members have already shown broad capability and competency. However after 3 years has elapsed, these members then need to demonstrate continuous professional development. The CPD program supports this approach with the development of a hierarchical, category based program that is in keeping with other competency based institutions.

Transition to the New Standards

AIPM Committees have undertaken an extensive amount of work under new leadership over the last 12 months which includes the introduction of New AIPM Professional Competency Standards for Certification from 1st July 2008. These standards supersede previous standards for Qualified Project Practitioner (QPP), Registered Project Manager (RPM) and Master Project Director (MPD) respectively.

From 1st September 2008 everyone who holds RegPM Certification will be given the new title as set out below:

Qualified Project Practitioner (QPP) à Certified Practising Project Practitioner (CPPP)

Registered Project Manager (RPM) à Certified Practising Project Manager (CPPM)

Master Project Director (MPD) à Certified Practising Project Director (CPPD)

This is the simplest way to make the transition. However; whilst the title has been given, at some point over the next 3 years, everyone who is certified will come up for recertification and at this point they must satisfy the competency requirements for the level against the new standards.

In the case of CPPM and CPPD, the standards are higher than for RPM and MPD and hence an assessment against the competency gap is required for certification against the new standards. This assessment is required for certified RegPMs and also for certified AIPM Assessors. No gap assessment is required for CPPP.

 CPD Recertification

The number of points required for recertification at each level is set out below:

Certified Practising Project Practitioner (CPPP) – 40 Points

Certified Practising Project Manager (CPPM) – 60 Points

Certified Practising Project Director (CPPD) – 80 Points

From 1st July 2008 recertification is only available by gaining the required number of CPD points. In the case of current RPMs and MPDs transitioning to the new RegPM levels, this includes a once-off provision for 50% of those CPD points being gained through an assessment of the competence gap between the old standards and the new standards. The other 50% of points should be made up of normal CPD activities which must be accumulated within the three year certification period. Activities and their values are clearly identified in the Categories & Points Table which is available on the AIPM website.

Once RegPMs are certified against the new standards, any subsequent recertification will only be attainable by undertaking recognisedactivities within the certification period in order to gain the minimum number CPD points required at the certification level.

RegPMs who have not accrued sufficient CPD activity points due to extenuating circumstances (for example if they have been unable to gain adequate CPD points due to their geographical location) can apply to have their case reviewed by the CPD Committee which may in such instances approve recertification by an assessor.

Logging Points

The AIPM website has a CPD Member Summary area so that members can log their CPD points online. It is important to remember that the CPD program is subject to random audits where members may be required to produce supporting evidence for CPD points claimed.

To recertify through the CPD program Members must collect the relevant number of points for their RegPM level within their current Certification period prior to completing the RegPM renewal application form. Login to the website to log your CPD Activities online via the Member Activity Summary

Please download the CPD Categories and Points Table for more information. If you have any queries or require assistance please contact the CPD Administrator.

Click here to download the CPD Categories and Points Table. This table lists the CPD categories and points available for members to collect for their recertification which falls due every 3 years.

Members may be required to support their application for CPD if audited so we advise members to file evidence to assist in the event that this occurs. Evidence can be uploaded and stored in your Member CPD Activity Log.
