IRC News April 2005 PRINT

Dear AIPM Member,

Welcome to the April 2005 IRC News and PM Select! As usual we have many new website and IRC developments to report, the key changes for April being the overhaul and portalisation of the IRC (at long last), and the introduction of a new Employment Portal. This is the last of the planned portals, and finally marks the end of major restructuring of the AIPM website [raucous and relieved clapping, beer cans being opened, etc...], which began way back in April 2004 when the left navigation buttons first began to be tweaked. Regular visitors who have recently bookmarked any of our our pages will have hopefully also noticed that our logo is now appearing in your "Favourites" list - if you haven't already, why not bookmark the AIPM Home page or the IRC right now!

PM SELECT:  Issue 4, April 2005 (click here to go to the PM Select)

The April PM Select contains eight more recent articles from across the international project management literature. The topics are:

- Project Success as seen by the Customer   - Business Benefits from PMOs & Programs

- Overview of IT Projects in Australia

  - Charismatic Leadership Style
- Project Manager Turnover in Projects   - Leadership & Conflict in Virtual Teams
- Project Managers as "Change Agents"   - Managing Projects in Asia

The March PM Select received a healthy 240 requests, 14 more than for the February edition. The most popular article - by a very tight margin - was number 1 "Project Management in the 21st century" by Dr. A. Jaafari, closely followed by number 3 "Senior Management Perceptions of PM Competence" by Dr. Lynn Crawford, and number 2 "Attributes and Levels of Programme Management Competence.." by Partington et al. More articles on PM Competence will follow soon! When you are accessing PM Select, please remember...

1) You need your username and password to access this "members only" area. If you have not received your username and password, have mislaid it, or are having trouble logging in, please go to this page.

2) Each article must be requested via a separate Copyright Declaration (not multiple requests on one declaration) - this is a requirement of International and National Copyright Law. NB This months' edition of PM Select has automated document delivery on a trial basis, where the document requested will upload to your screen as soon as the document request form has been filled in and you have clicked "Send". If your system does not download these PDF documents fast enough, or says the file is "damaged", you are probably using a version of Acrobat earlier than 6.0 - either download a more recent version of Acrobat, or revert to the previous method of requesting PM Select articles - a link to the old Copyright Declaration is included on the April PM Select. We hope that this will be a regular feature of PM Select from now on - if the trial is successful, it will be! I therefore need to hear from YOU to know if it's working well, or not - any problems, feedback, questions, comments, etc PLEASE contact me at kodonnell@aipm.com.au

INFORMATION RESOURCE CENTRE (IRC) & WEBSITE UPDATES

a) Ongoing Changes to the AIPM Home Page: The Home page has been further tightened up into its own portal, and the top navigation buttons have also been overhauled, eliminating some annoying technical glitches. New drop-down functionality means that all the Useful Links and YourPM pages are now accessible in one place, as well as various Membership-related pages such as Benefits, Renewals, and Upgrade forms. The other significant change is the new “Search” Box, which is now found at the top right of every screen. Coming soon - an overhaul of those annoying left navigation buttons! If you haven't visited for while, have a look

b) Improved IRC Portal: To complement the recently launched new IRC Project Management Research Library, the IRC Portal finally received the overhaul treatment and went live on 19th April. The new portal gives a cleaner, more accessible way of finding all the many services and knowledge resources of the IRC easily on the one page, and has a much easier to read (and find!) "What's New in the IRC" section. See the overhauled IRC Portal

c) New IRC Bibliographies: There are FOUR new bibliographies for you to look at this month:

1) Project Managed Change   2) Six Sigma and Project Management
3) Project Approval Processes   4) The Future of Project Management

Follow this link to see these (and many other) bibliographies

Don't forget that you can obtain copies of ANY of the articles contained in any bibliographies by filling out the required Copyright Declaration Form in the IRC Document Supply section. There is a limit of 20 article requests at a time, due to overwhelming demand in the last couple of weeks. And members can also request their very own bibliography on the topic of their choice by going to the IRC Literature Search section - again demand for this service has also skyrocketed, and research turnover times are now unfortunately longer than before as a result....

d) New Employment Portal: The new AIPM Employment Portal went live on the 27th April, and groups all of our many employment services and resources together in the one place, so you can find that job, add your name to the “Looking for Work” listing, or just find out more about our Endorsed Recruiters, with out sliding up and down numerous left nav buttons. See the new Employment Portal here

As a result of developing the content for the portal, the following improvements and content are now found within in it:

Overhaul of the "Looking for Work" Section: This section now displays the name, industry and preferred location of job-hunters on the screen, so that prospective employers can zero in on you just that little bit faster! Looking for Work?

- Project Management Salary Surveys: A collection of current online salary surveys relevant to Project Managers has been added to the ever-popular "Useful Links" Page, and you can also fill out the new online AIPM Project Manager Salary and Fee Survey so we can find out who is getting what, and where! (anonymously of course…). Both of these are also found in the Employment Portal above.

e) IRC Seminars - OH&S Obligations and their Impact on Project Managers: Recently a NSW Chapter event met to hear this topic presented by Mehmet Bozkurt. The presentation from this event is now available to download from the IRC Seminar Papers Page

f) 2005 AIPM Conference & Project Management Achievement Awards (PMAA): A reminder that submission deadlines for the PMAA and IPMAA programs is 4pm, 17th June. We hope your submissions are going smoothly, and look forward to their arrival! Any queries, just check out the PMAA Portal

Also, if you were thinking of submitting an abstract for a paper at the 2005 AIPM National Conference, it's not too late, even though the deadline has just passed. So far a total 42 abstracts have been received, so if you think you have a killer paper on the Future of Project Management, you can send it in via the "Submit Abstracts here" link in the 2005 Conference Portal

g) AIPM Website Statistics: March was an insane month, with over 810,000 hits received, 102,000 pages viewed, and 35,700 visits! This was the busiest month for the website ever recorded. IRC pages (especially the Useful Links page) and the Endorsed Courses Portal are perfoming very strongly, although April has unexpectedly seen a significant decline across all areas on last month - I blame the school holidays!  View the latest AIPM website statistics
