IRC News February 2005 PRINT

Dear AIPM Member,

Welcome to the February editions of  IRC News and PM Select. February has been flat-out in terms of development and changes made to the site - both the completion of existing projects, and the planning and designing of new ones.

As promised last month, a new portal for the 2005 Project Management Achievement Awards is now up, going live on the 25th February. Now no-one has any excuses at all for not starting to plan their submissions! Planning for the new improved Home Page is also well advanced, so keep an eye out for the first changes due in early March, which will see long-overdue improvements made to the left-hand and top navigation buttons, plus a better way of searching the website. Bigger changes for the Home Page in March are now in the advanced planning stages, as are big changes to the main IRC page...

The new IRC Library is now fully installed and labelled within an inch of its life - however, as we are still getting all the PCs re-connected and moving desks around after the complete overall of National Office, alas it's not really ready for visitors just yet... I will keep you posted!

As part of the same overhaul, all National Office staff now have new email addresses and DIRECT phone numbers - click on our names below to see them. The main numbers for AIPM have also changed - they are now phone: (02) 8288 8700  fax: (02) 8288 8711.

PM SELECT:  Issue 2, February 2005

This months edition of PM Select features another eight recent articles from across the project management literature. The topics are:

- Managing Complex Project Schedules   - Construction Project Planners
- Sustainable Project Life Cycle Management     - Ethics and Project Management
- Leadership vs Management in PM   - IT Go/No-Go Decisions & Project Sponsors
- Management of Multiple IT Projects     - Construction Contract Collaboration in China

The January PM Select exceeded all expectations for a "normal" issue, with 257 requests made. By far the most popular article was number 6 "Project Failure - 12 Mistakes to Avoid" by D. Sommer (77 requests), followed by "Transformation leadership in a project-based environment..." by Keegan and den Hartog. Correspondingly there is an additional articles on leadership styles in this months' issue. When you are accessing PM Select, please remember...

1) You need your username and password to access this "members only" area. If you have not received your username and password, have mislaid it, or are having trouble logging in, please go to this page.

2) Each article must be requested on a separate Copyright Declaration, not multiple requests on one declaration - this is a requirement of International and National Copyright Law. Note down the article document number(s) that you want before filling out the forms eg 1/05 - 4 will request article number 4 from the January 05 edition. Any questions, comments, problems, etc – feel free to contact me at kevin@aipm.com.au

INFORMATION RESOURCE CENTRE (IRC) & WEBSITE UPDATES

a) New Project Management Achievement Awards (PMAA) Portal: This is still a work in progress, and many of the forms are still waiting for their 2005 versions, so please treat these as guides only at this stage, until the new versions are added over the next few weeks as they come to hand... The new portal groups all the previous confusing sublinks and multiple pages onto one page, making it (I hope) a lot easier to find anything to do with the PMAA (and of course to help you send in lots of submissions for this year's awards). Check out the new Portal here!

b) New Improved IRC Bibliographies Page: As the bibliographies page became ever longer with new bibliographies being added all the time, the need for internal links to enable members to to jump down to their favourite categories became even greater - so I have added some! There are also THREE new bibliographies to look at this month (alas there was bug for a week or so with the WBS bibliography link, which took some time to identify and fix - it's working now):

1) Ethics in Project Management   2) Contracts Management Overview   3) WBS & Templates in IT Projects

Follow this link to these bibliographies and the improved page

Don't forget that you can obtain copies of ANY of these referenced articles by filling out the required Copyright Declaration Form in IRC Document Supply.  And members can request their very own bibliography by going to the IRC Literature Search section.

c) IRC Research & Surveys: A while back TzeLing Ng conducted a survey of Members for her Masters thesis, to find out how widespread Risk Management Assessment in the Early Phase of Construction Projects was - you can now see her results and analysis here.

Also, Mark Gregory is still seeking further responses via his online survey for his research on Software Applications for Project Management and Associated Activities - if you are interested, you can help Mark out here on the AIPM Surveys page.

d) Software: "Project Diagnostics Software" Presentation: Recently several events were held in conjunction with AIPM Strategic Partner CRC Construction Innovation in NSW, QLD and VIC, where members could find out more about this exciting new software package. If you couldn't make it, you can see the presentation from these events in the IRC Seminars Page.

AIPM tries to keep our members current with relevant PM software, so you may also be interested in IBM's free national half-day seminars "IBM developerWorks Live – On Demand Software: Process and portfolio management technical briefing", running from the 8th till 23rd March. See here for more information

e) New "Project Managed Organisation" (PMO) Register:  Ever wondered who has already been accredited the PMO by AIPM? There are new companies and organisations being added every week... Find out who already has it here!

f) PM Jobs: There are NINE new vacancies in the Jobs Register at them moment - everything from 3G Telecommunications to Utilities. If 2005 could be better for you, then you should have a look... If you are already looking for work, don't forget that we have a members-only Register for that as well...

g) Upcoming Events of Interest: Project Managers of the fairer sex may be interested in the upcoming event in Queensland on the 18th March titled "Challenging Project Management" - jointly-organised by AIPM, Women in Technology, and NAWIC - National Association of Women in Construction, this should be a very interesting forum!
