IRC News January 2005 PRINT

Dear AIPM Member,

Welcome to the first editions of IRC News and PM Select for 2005! So far January has been very quiet compared to November and December in terms of development, thanks mainly to being on annual leave until the middle of the month, not to mention a very nasty bout of 'flu knocking me for six as soon as I got back...

However, although there is not a massive amount of new development to report in the IRC (or the website) so far, planning is already well advanced for the next round of improvements - big and small - for 2005. Up-and-coming developments include:

  • a new fully-searchable Endorsed Course Database, to build on the improvements made in November
  • a new Project Management Achievement Awards (PMAA) Portal to group all PMAA info together (coming soon...)
  • a new improved AIPM Home Page
  • more interactive quick surveys for members
  • new Information Resources in the IRC
  • visiting access for members to the newly overhauled IRC Library (also coming soon...)
  • "YourPM" Links Page for the Information Technology & Telecoms sector (amongst others)

I am looking forward to receiving ongoing member feedback, content requests, and contributions throughout out the year, for both the website as a whole, and for the IRC in particular. These resources are valuable and unique, and give you, the members, a real information advantage, not to mention a substantial benefit from your membership fees. The more I hear from you, the better these resources will become!

Kevin O'Donnell IRC Manager / AIPM Webmaster

PM SELECT:  Issue 1, January 2005

This months edition of PM Select returns to the normal format, with a real mixture of eight of the best - and most accessible - papers from across the recent project management literature. The topics are:

- Transformational Leadership in PM     - Team Leadership in Technology Projects
- Measuring Software Quality      - Using Metrics to Improve Project Performance
- Improving Project ROI with KM   - Project Failure - Mistakes to Avoid
- A Successful Gas Plant Project     - Risk Efficiency in Infrastructure Projects

As expected, the November PM Select featuring all AIPM 2004 Conference papers exceeded all expectations in terms of demand, and was definitely the busiest on record in terms of the numbers of requests, with over 270 received and processed. The most popular papers were "The Corporate Improvement Project (CIP) for Project Management" by Murray Gough (PM3), and "Establishing a Project Office: Case Study" by Colin McCall-Peat (PM8).

When you are accessing PM Select, please remember...

1) You need your username and password to access this "members only" area. If you have not received your username and password, have mislaid it, or are having trouble logging in, please go to this page.

2) Each article must be requested on a separate Copyright Declaration, not multiple requests on one declaration - this is a requirement of International and National Copyright Law. Note down the article document number(s) that you want before filling out the forms eg 1/05 - 4 will request article number 4 from the January 05 edition. Any questions, comments, problems, etc – feel free to contact me at kevin@aipm.com.au

INFORMATION RESOURCE CENTRE (IRC) & WEBSITE UPDATES

a) Overhaul of the Information Resource Centre Library: As part of the complete refurbishment of AIPM National Office (which is still in full swing), the existing IRC Library has been dragged kicking and screaming into the light, given a thorough clean out, re-organised, and moved into a new location. Once the transformation of this resource is complete - hopefully by mid-February - this valuable collection of project management journals, books, conferences, databases and reference materials will then be made available to AIPM members, who can come in (by appointment) to do their own project management research. A PC with database access to our fully-indexed collection and a photocopier will be available to prospective researchers. Keep an eye on the AIPM Home Page for further announcements closer to the time!

b) IRC Newsletters Section Access: The Newsletters page has been tidied up and made open-access, in order to encourage non-members to better explore what is happening in their respective State Chapters. A new separate members-only PM Select archive has also been created. See:    Newsletters Page      PM Select Archive

c) Professional Indemnity Survey: AIPM has wound up the survey looking into problems experienced by our self-employed, Contracting or Consulting members when they try to obtain Professional Indemnity (PI) Insurance. The response rate was not huge, alas. We were surprised! The results have been forwarded to a possible alliance partner in the Insurance Industry, and an announcement should be forthcoming in the next couple of months....

d) IRC Bibliographies:  This month only ONE bibliography has been added to the IRC Bibliographies section:
                                                                - Team Dynamics in Engineering Projects.

Follow this link to see this and other bibliographies

Don't forget that you can obtain copies of ANY of these referenced articles by filling out the required Copyright Declaration Form in IRC Document Supply.  And members can request their very own bibliography by going to the IRC Literature Search section.

e) New National Office Staff: AIPM welcomes two new staff who started in January - Markus Meier-Lindner, our new Corporate Services Manager, and Angela Tracy, our new Administration Co-ordinator.

f) Website Statistics: Due to a major glitch with our off-site statistics server, the stats for November and December went a bit haywire, finally being corrected in mid-January. However November still managed to surpass October's total of 723,873 hits, with 735,502 hits made to the site - the highest monthly total for the year, and no-doubt helped by the huge response to the November PM Select. December not surprisingly was down on November, but still managed a very respectable 585,707 hits (with almost 5,000 people actually visting the site on Xmas day). This year we intend to crack the "1,000,000 hits per month mark" by the end of the year.... The IRC was slightly up on October's total of 1155 hits to the main IRC page, with 1205 hits made in November. So far this January the site has had over 664,000 hits, as compared to 272,000 hits in January 2004...

g) PM Jobs: So far in 2005 seven new jobs have already been added to the AIPM Jobs Register. If you want to get 2005 off to a new start, check them out! New jobs are also listed for a short time in the "What's New on the Website" section of the Home page, as space permits.

h) The 2005 Project Management Achievement Awards are coming up soon! Don't forget to start thinking about your entries for the 2005 PMAA, Student, and IPMAA Awards - those deadlines come up faster than you think! Find out who to contact in your State here
