IRC News March 2005 PRINT

Dear AIPM Member,

Welcome to the March 2005 IRC News and PM Select. Once again this month has seen much frenetic activity on the AIPM website - and in the IRC! At long last the new members-only IRC Research Library has been completed, and this major new IRC knowledge resource is now ready for use - see below for more information...

The key development for the website in March was the new AIPM Conference Portal, following hot on the heels of the Project Management Achievement Awards Portal introduced last month (how are your submissions going?). We hope that this will make finding out about - and attending - the upcoming Conference as easy as possible!

As promised, major changes to the Home Page have begun, with a new single screen "portalised" look introduced, and that annoying bit of flash being removed. Improvements to the Left and Top navigation buttons are alas taking longer than expected, but a new improved Search function will be seen in early April. Also coming up in April is a new improved IRC Portal (already well underway...) to complement the new improved Library, and a new Employment Portal, to give everyone much easier access to our many - and very popular - job-related resources.

PM SELECT:  Issue 3, March 2005 (click here to go to the PM Select)

The March PM Select features another eight recent articles from across the international project management literature. The topics are:

- Project Management in the 21st Century   - Measuring Programme Management Competence

- Senior Management's View of PM Competencies

  - Project Leadership Using Balanced Scorecards
- PM in the Financial Services Sector   - Risk Allocation in PPP/PFI Construction Projects
- Working out Knowledge Management Inventories     - Managing Product & Service Innovation e-Projects

The February PM Select was a little esoteric in some of its topics, and so requests were down compared to the record January issue, with 226 requests made in total. By far the most popular article was number 3 "Leadership: when management is not enough" by P. Dimov. (66 requests), followed by "How to effectively manage complex project schedules" by Brokman. When you are accessing PM Select, please remember...

1) You need your username and password to access this "members only" area. If you have not received your username and password, have mislaid it, or are having trouble logging in, please go to this page.

2) Each article must be requested on a separate Copyright Declaration, not multiple requests on one declaration - this is a requirement of International and National Copyright Law. Note down the article document number(s) that you want before filling out the forms eg 1/05 - 4 will request article number 4 from the January 05 edition. Any questions, comments, problems, etc – feel free to contact me at kevin@aipm.com.au

INFORMATION RESOURCE CENTRE (IRC) & WEBSITE UPDATES

a) IRC Research Library Now Open to AIPM Members: After much re-organisation, labelling, and ongoing fiddling with PCs, the long-promised IRC Research Library is now open to AIPM members. Access to this new resource is a major benefit of AIPM membership, as the library is one of the best resources of its type for project management in Australia. Members who are researching topics in project management, writing papers, or even just trying to find an article, can come in by appointment and browse the collection, with full internet access. Find out more about visiting the IRC Research Library

b) New 2005 National Conference Portal: Like its PMAA predecessor, the new Conference portal groups all the previous confusing sublinks and multiple pages onto one page, making it easier to find anything to do with the Conference. Many new links will be added as we proceed though the year. Have you filled out the Expression of Interest form, or submitted an abstract online for a conference paper yet? Check out the new Conference Portal

2004 AIPM Conference Papers Full Text: AIPM members can now access nearly all of the papers from the 2004 Perth Conference full-text, right here! (this page is found under the "Previous Conferences" link in the Portal).

c) New Bibliographies: There are EIGHT new bibliographies for you to look at this month, across many different subjects:

1) Conflict & Disputes in Construction   2) Beyond the "Time Cost Quality Triangle"
3) Lynn Crawford Bibliography   4) Benefits Realisation in IT/Change Projects
5) Banking & Finance Projects   6) Program Strategy Development for IT Projects
7) "Soft" Projects in the Public/Govt. Sector   8) Enterprise Project Management

Follow this link to see these (and other) bibliographies

Don't forget that you can obtain copies of ANY of the articles contained in any bibliographies by filling out the required Copyright Declaration Form in the IRC Document Supply section. And members can also request their very own bibliography on the topic of their choice by going to the IRC Literature Search section.

d) IRC Research & Surveys: Paul Giammalvo is seeking to discover how Project Managers see their profession, and in particular if there is any difference between how our RegPM’s perceive the occupational specialty of Project Management compared to those with PMP’s, Professional Engineers (PE’s), and other related certification credentials. If you are interested (and ideally have RegPM), you can find this online survey in the IRC Surveys Page.

e) AIPM Bookshop: This is gradually being revived, after being in forced hibernation for quite some time now due to depletion of all existing stock. It's early days yet, but the page has been overhauled, and you can at least purchase recent AIPM Conference proceedings on CDROM, and find who supplies PM Books - not to mention the PMBOK! Visit the nascent AIPM Bookshop...

f) Call for Member Profiles: Like to be famous? Well, we can't promise you that, but if you would like to have your profile featured on the AIPM Member Profiles page - and maybe even in the Australian Project Manager Journal - then send your details to me (have a look at what other members have added, and don't forget a good quality digital photo)

g) Website Statistics After ongoing and major problems with the external statistics server from December 2004, things have finally settled down again and the figures are reliable once more. Stats for the IRC, Membership Portal, and the new Endorsed Courses portal are going through the roof so far in 2005, and February was the busiest month in the history of the AIPM website, with 762,000 hits made to the server, and a record 32,700 sessions served - despite having only 28 days! March is looking good, but Easter has definitely deflated the 800,000 hits momentum we had up earlier in the month. View the latest AIPM website statistics
