The AIPM Queensland Chapter presented the award to the Brisbane City Council during the 2004 Project Management Achievement Awards in Brisbane on Friday night (10 September).

AIPM recognised the park as an outstanding example of the Council’s achievements in managing the construction and refurbishment of Brisbane’s built spaces and parklands.

The Rocks Riverside Park, completed in December 2003, involved a major rehabilitation of a former industrial site and was the first major park in Brisbane’s outer western suburbs.

Establishment of the park involved the refurbishment and rehabilitation of a large industrial site on the banks of the Brisbane River.  The new park incorporates water- play features, climbing and play equipment, barbecue shelters and open spaces.  A few elements of the site’s industrial past have been left in place as a reminder to visitors of the area’s previous purpose.

AIPM Queensland Chapter President, Alan Tupicoff says the Brisbane City Council was highly deserving of the Year of the Built Environment Award for Rocks Riverside Park.

“The Year of the Built Environment acknowledges seven major themes in 2004, with excellence in building, healthy environments, design for all, our built heritage and sustainable communities among them,” he said.

“The Rocks Riverside Park has been developed with incredible sensitivity to the river environment, the needs of the community and the industrial heritage of the area.  It is a huge success with families and will remain an asset for the people of Brisbane for generations.

“The Brisbane City Council is to be commended for its project management of this site, which gives the people of Brisbane increased access to their River landscape,” Mr Tupicoff said.

The Australian Institute of Project management established the Achievement Awards to recognise and promote the achievements of project managers.

The Year of the Built Environment Awards are presented to organisations or individuals who make a significant contribution to preserving and enhancing our built environment.  This AIPM Award is one of 25 individual YBE Awards which will be presented to mark the year.
