Gilbert + Tobin leads the way with industry-first project management accreditation for lawyers

Australian Institute of Project Management certification recognises firm’s ability to manage complex matters and drive efficiency for clients.

The project management profession cuts across many paths and industries. The impact of good project management is increasingly relevant to good business, and it is no surprise to see these discussions arising across a range of “non-traditional” project management professions.

One such industry is the legal profession, which refers to the management of delivering legal services as ‘matter management’. Whilst matter management is a long-established professional obligation for lawyers, an increasingly complex legal, regulatory and technological environment is seeing law firms, in-house legal teams and legal professionals putting increased importance on instilling project management principles across their businesses.

Leading the way is Gilbert + Tobin, which is the first law firm in Australia to formally incorporate AIPM certification into the learning and development pathway of their senior lawyers. As part of a firm-wide initiative, Gilbert + Tobin currently has nearly 40 senior lawyers undertaking the Certified Practicing Project Participant (CPPP) accreditation process, and which provides professional confirmation of their existing skills in managing legal work.

“Senior lawyers are required to undertake a significant amount of project management as part of their day-to-day activities” says Peter Dombkins MAIPM CPPD, Head of Legal Project Management at Gilbert + Tobin.  “AIPM provides a recognised and independent benchmark for project management competencies, and provides our clients with confidence in our ability to manage complex matters.”

Gilbert + Tobin are also the first law firm in Australia to provide AIPM-endorsed training in LPM for in-house legal teams, covering core competencies and practical tools applicable to both legal and non-legal projects.

“Here at the AIPM, we closely monitor industry trends, and due to the nature of our profession need to stay abreast of what is happening across almost every industry imaginable” AIPM CEO, Mr Andrew Madry, was quoted as saying recently. “With the increasing importance across industries on compliance and risk, we have seen a growing trend in project professionals in the legal field here in Australia”.

The Australian Institute of Project Management is the peak body for Project Management in Australia. Its aim is to drive the professionalism of project management and to be regarded as a world authority and advocate on project management practices and competency.  Its mission is to foster the application of project management skills and techniques in order to deliver exceptional organisational outcomes.  AIPM has been a key driver behind Australia becoming a world leader in professional participation in project management.

Gilbert + Tobin is a leading corporate law firm, named ‘Law Firm of the Year’ at both the 2017 and 2016 Lawyers Weekly Australian Law Awards, and awarded as most innovative law firm at the 2017 Financial Times Asia-Pacific Innovative Lawyers Awards.
