Hurstville Substation Upgrade Project | Sydney Trains
NSW WINNER 2019
This Project was necessary to increase the capacity of Sydney Trains’ electrical network to accommodate the ‘more trains, more services’ program. Designed by Bradfield (“father of the railways”) in the 1900s, with equipment dating from the 1950s, the Heritage-listed Hurstville Substation needed to provide more traction power to run more trains on the Illawarra Line. It would have been easier to demolish/replace this Substation but as its Heritage value had to be preserved, and the Substation had to remain operational, the project involved replacing all of its equipment without disrupting trains or damaging the Heritage building. The team
overcame the challenges of working in a ‘live’ substation, integrating new equipment with old and “unique” electrical systems, severely constrained site access, unexpected emergency work (the substation’s 33kV transformer failed mid-project), and delivered the project safely, on time and nearly $1m under budget.
