Sydney Strathfield Signal Box Automation (SSSBA) | Sydney Trains
NSW WINNER 2019
With patronage now at 358 million passenger journeys per year, completing the Sydney Strathfield Signal Box Automation (SSSBA) project was the most strategically important project Major Works delivered in 2018. Put simply, it would be impossible to provide the uplift in services needed to meet future demand without automating the remaining manual signalling control panels at the Sydney and Strathfield signal boxes, and this increase in network capacity is what the SSSBA project made possible. While SSSBA didn’t involve trackside asset replacement, it was nevertheless the most challenging of a series of projects over the last two decades to progressively update signalling infrastructure to enable computerised control of trackside equipment and consolidate the operations of local signal boxes into three control centres. The fact that a previous attempt to automate Sydney Box in the 1990s had to be abandoned highlights the complexity of this undertaking.
