The Inland Rail Project and the stakeholder engagement process


With Australia’s population projected to increase to 36.8 million people by 2047, productive freight networks, ports and other critical infrastructure are the key to efficient supply chains and to Australia’s competitiveness and prosperity.
The once-in-a-generation Inland Rail project - divided into 13 individual projects across 37 local government areas in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland - will complete the backbone of the national freight network and be operational from 2025. Key to the success of this major national infrastructure project is the support of governments, partnership with the private sector and importantly, being able to work hand-in-hand with the community.
This AIPM event will look specifically at stakeholder engagement as a key component of the Inland Rail Program, in terms of project management and lessons learnt.
Rob McNamara, Project Director for the North Star to Gowrie / QLD section of Inland Rail, will share insights into how his team has facilitated quality stakeholder engagement, not only to advise communities about Inland Rail but also to allow community engagement to inform outcomes and initiate changes to the project.  
Discover how the team works with diverse stakeholders along the rail alignment – including local councils, landowners, communities, and businesses – to facilitate technical and ecological investigations and to ensure the positive progression of the project overall.

Rob McNamara Rob McNamara is the North Star to Gowrie (NS2G) Project Director for the Inland Rail Program at the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC). As the Project Director, he is responsible for leading two of the 13 individual projects that make up the Inland Rail Program. Inland Rail’s NSW/QLD Border to Gowrie project is the largest within Queensland comprising 224km of new dual gauge track.

Rob has more than 30 years’ experience, working for major mining and infrastructure companies such as AMCI, Newcrest Mining, BlueScope Steel and MIM Holdings Limited, developing and executing major projects, with 15 of those years in global leadership roles. He has worked in Australia, Asia, Europe and the United States, and is highly regarded for his commercial, negotiation, business development and strategy skills.
