Are project management and complex project management two separate professions?
No, complex project management and project management are not separate professions. Complexity is an inherent part of the project management process, not a distinct or external discipline. All projects, regardless of size or scope, contain varying degrees of complexity due to factors such as multiple stakeholders, interdependencies, resource constraints, and evolving risks.
Effective project management involves recognising and managing this complexity through adaptive approaches, collaborative leadership, and the use of appropriate tools and frameworks. Navigating complexity is a core competency of professional project managers, who are trained to respond to uncertainty, balance competing priorities, and deliver outcomes in dynamic environments.
Rather than being a separate profession, managing complexity is embedded in the role of all skilled project managers. It’s part of what makes project management both challenging and essential across industries.
What is the difference between the Registered Project Manager (RegPM™) certification and the Chartered Project Professional (ChPP) certification?
While the titles differ, the RegPM™ certification awarded by the Australian Institute of Project Management (AIPM™) is considered equivalent to the Chartered status commonly recognised in the UK. Both represent the highest standards of professional competence, experience, and ethical practice within their respective regions.
Chartered status in the UK is often linked to royal charters and reflects a governance structure tied to the monarchy. In contrast, Australia’s professional certification bodies, such as the AIPM™, operate under a different governance model, independent of royal or government charters, and are structured as member-based professional associations. This difference in governance reflects the broader historical and institutional distinctions between the two countries.
The RegPM™ certification aligns with global best practice through its rigorous, competency-based assessment and strong emphasis on continuous professional development (CPD). It is also globally recognised as a benchmark of project management excellence, demonstrating an individual’s capability and commitment to professional standards on the international stage.
The key difference between the RegPM™ and Chartered certifications lies primarily in terminology and regional context, not in the level of recognition or the expectations of professional excellence. The RegPM™ certification stands as Australia’s benchmark for project management professionalism, much like the Chartered status does in the UK.

Which certification level should I apply for?
If you’re unsure which certification level is right for you, visit our certification page which runs through the different levels in detail. You can also take our self-evaluation quiz to help you determine which level to apply for or make an enquiry for more assistance.
Is the RegPM™ certification industry specific?
No, certification is not industry specific. The great part about our certification program, is that once you’re certified as a project professional it will apply no matter which industry you work in.
Does the AIPM have a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process for its RegPM™ certification?
We will automatically grant the Certified Practising Project Practitioner (CPPP) level of RegPM™ certification to individuals who have completed a course or certification on our approved list and applied for CPPP level. To apply for this, you will need to be an AIPM™ as an Individual Member.
I have a project management qualification. Does that qualify me as a RegPM™?
The short answer is no, as there is a difference between a certification (issued by a professional body) and a qualification (issued by a university, TAFE, or registered training authority etc.).
While certification assesses your workplace-based competency, generally qualifications issued by universities and other higher education institutions do not include a competency-based component in the assessment criteria. Instead, the assessment component usually comprises of exams and assignments, and focuses on knowledge only.
I am not currently working in project management. Am I still able to apply for certification?
The RegPM™ is a workplace assessment program. When compiling the logbook for the RegPM™, you must be able to provide evidence from a recent project or projects within the past 3 years for each performance criteria.
This will be easier to do if you are currently working on a project(s). If you are not working on a project, then it may take longer to gather the evidence. It is also possible to complete the program using evidence of your project management capabilities applied in some other context, e.g., projects you may be involved in for volunteer associations.
I am not a resident in Australia. Can I still apply for certification?
Yes, you can still apply for certification. AIPM™ has members from all around the world who have successfully completed our certification program, communicating with their assessors via email and through video calls.
Please note that you will need to complete all assessment documentation, provide the required project management evidence, and participate in an interview in English.

What is the Capability Management Certification?
In project management, a ‘Capability’ refers to the combination of resources, skills, processes, and technologies that an organisation possesses, which collectively enable it to effectively initiate, plan, execute, monitor, and close projects to achieve desired outcomes. It encompasses the competencies and capacities of the project team, the maturity of project management practices, and the availability of tools and systems that support project activities. A high level of capability in project management ensures that projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards, aligning with strategic objectives.
A ‘Capability Manager’ is a professional responsible for developing, managing, and enhancing the organisation’s project management capabilities. This role involves identifying, developing, managing, and maintaining the necessary resources, skills, processes, and technologies to ensure successful project delivery. The Capability Manager works to align project management practices with the organisation’s strategic goals and objectives, ensuring continuous improvement and maturity in project execution.
The Capability Management Certification is suitable for professionals who are involved in the capability lifecycle, an integrated process used to manage a capability from being initially identified, through to being approved when all the governance requirements are satisfied, and, eventually, to being retired when it is considered to be no longer necessary.
This includes the development and delivery of capital projects, and associated through-life support, related to major capital equipment, infrastructure, enterprise enablers and information and communications technology.
For more information about the RegPM™ certification level, please visit the AIPM certification page.
Should I complete the capability RegPM™ or standard RegPM™ certification?
Standard RegPM™ (Levels: CPPP, CPSPM, CPPM, CPPD, CPPE) is designed for individuals seeking formal recognition of their project management competence based on demonstrated on-the-job performance.
Capability-based RegPM™ is suited to capability managers and leaders responsible for aligning project delivery with strategic goals, through structured assessment and uplift of project-related resources, skills, processes, and technologies.
If you’re an individual looking to certify your own professional practice, choose Standard RegPM™. If you’re working in a role with a focus on building enterprise-wide capability and maturity in project delivery, explore Capability-based RegPM™.
For organisations looking to formalise their project management excellence at a strategic and enterprise level, AIPM™ also offers the Corporate Project Management Accreditation (RegPMC™). RegPMC™ positions your organisation at the forefront of project delivery by certifying excellence in governance, methodologies, risk and quality management, stakeholder engagement, performance measurement, and ethical practices. This prestigious accreditation demonstrates a commitment to continuous improvement, innovation, and the highest standards in project execution, building trust with clients, partners, and stakeholders.
I am a registered Project Manager (RegPM™), am I eligible to apply for the Capability Management Certifications?
You may apply for recognition as a Registered Capability Manager at your current RegPM™ certification level (e.g., CPPM to CPCM).
For further information and to apply, please contact the AIPM RegPM™ Team: repm@aipm.com.au
What are the competency standards and certification requirements for the Capability Management certification stream?
The competency standards for the capability certification stream are similar to those for the project management stream as both streams focus on assessing the candidates’ skills and experience in managing the process (e.g. time, budget, quality, risk).
However, those wishing to apply for and obtain a certification in capability management will be required to demonstrate experience specifically in managing capability projects.
How do I access my digital RegPM™ certification?
Digital certificates are available immediately within your account. These can be found on your AIPM™ dashboard and are accessible to current members and RegPM™ holders. If your membership has lapsed or you have not renewed your certification, these will not be available.
How long is my RegPM™ Certification valid for?
RegPM™ Certification remains valid for a period of three years.
Holders of a RegPM™ Certification are advised that, for the certification to remain valid for the full three‑year term, they are required to maintain their AIPM™ membership and undertake ongoing professional development throughout the certification period, and pay the applicable recertification fee when it becomes due. Certification holders must accrue and maintain a minimum of 70 CPD points in accordance with the prescribed recertification requirements.

- What will happen after I have successfully completed certification?
Who are the assessors?
AIPM’s assessors are highly skilled project management professionals who are experienced in project management and competency-based assessment methods.
What does ‘competent’ or ‘not yet competent’ mean?

- Outcome of not yet competent: your assessor will provide guidance on where the gaps are, and you can choose how to fill them in. The current assessment process will be closed and if you wish to be assessed again when you have closed the gaps, this will require a new application.
What if I fail?
There is no pass or fail criteria, only ‘competent’ or ‘not yet competent’. If you receive a ‘not yet competent’, your assessor will provide guidance on where the gaps are, and you can choose how to fill the gaps. The current assessment process will be closed and if you wish to be assessed again when you have closed the gaps, this will require a new certification assessment application.
How long does RegPM™ certification take?
There is a six-month timeframe for candidates to complete their assessment after applying. If you have been involved in project management for some time, you may be able to complete your assessment sooner than this.
What if I have extenuating circumstances while I am completing my assessment?
If you are unable to meet the deadline for the submission of your assessment evidence due to extenuating circumstances (such as serious illness or bereavement) you may apply for a one-month extension.
To be considered, circumstances must be supported with written evidence. All extension requests are subject to the AIPM RegPM™ Extension Policy.

- CPCD for Certified Practising Capability Director
- CPCS for Certified Practising Capability Sponsor
You can add the postnominals to your email signature, resume, letterhead, and LinkedIn profile to highlight your competency in project management.
Maintaining your RegPM™ certification
- What do I have to do to maintain my certification?
- Do I have to continue to be an AIPM™ member to remain certified?
- Once I am included on AIPM’s Member directory as RegPM™ certified, how long does this registration last?
- How do I recertify at a higher RegPM™ level?
What do I have to do to maintain my certification?
It’s important once you have completed your certification to continue your knowledge of the project management space. To maintain your RegPM™ certification you will need to maintain your membership with AIPM, pay the recertification fee when its due, and undertake continual professional development (CPD) and maintain 70 CPD points over the course of three years. We offer you a host of ways to upskill and stay updated on all that is latest from the project management industry. Access our CPD categories and points table.
Do I have to continue to be an AIPM™ member to remain certified?
Yes. Certification is a benefit of membership of the AIPM™. For your certification to remain valid, and to continue to use the postnominals, you need to remain a member by paying your annual membership renewal fee.
Once I am included on AIPM’s Member directory as RegPM™ certified, how long does this registration last?
You will need to opt-in to the member directory. To do this, log into your account and access your profile. In the “About me” section, under profile preference, select ‘Yes’ to list me on the member directory.
You will be listed as a member and RegPM™ certified for the duration of your award period (three years from the date your RegPM™ certification was issued, subject to maintain your membership with AIPM™). After three years, RegPM™ certification recipients must recertify to remain on the directory.
How do I recertify at a higher RegPM™ level?
You can only recertify at your current RegPM™ level and this is achieved by payment of a recertification fee and meeting of CPD requirements. If you choose to upgrade to the next level of certification (i.e., CPPP to CPPM or CPPM to CPPD/CPPE) you will need to demonstrate competency at this new level, and this is classified as a new assessment.
Continual professional development (CPD) points
- Where do I find and log my points?
- How do I find out how many CPD points an activity I completed is worth?
- I accidentally submitted the wrong information, what do I do?
- Do I need to upload my evidence?
- I submitted CPD points, but it is not reflecting on My CPD records, why is that?
- Who assigns CPD points for AIPM™ events, including webinars and the AIPM™ Conference?
- What happens to my CPD points after I recertify?
Where do I find and log my points?
The CPD log is a self-managed system. To log your CPD points, you’ll need to log into your account. Once logged in, select the button ‘Update CPD’ under RegPM™ certification or click here.
How do I find out how many CPD points an activity I completed is worth?
Please refer to the CPD categories and points table to determine how many CPD points you are eligible for and what category the record should come under.
I accidentally submitted the wrong information, what do I do?
Once you have submitted CPD points, you are not able to edit the records. To make any amendments, please email regpm@aipm.com.au or contact us detailing the changes that need to be made.
Do I need to upload my evidence?
While you are not required to upload your evidence to the AIPM™ website, you are required to retain a copy of your evidence for your certification period (three years). Should you be subject to a CPD audit, you will be required to show evidence of your CPD.
Evidence may include certificates of attendance or attainment, confirmation of webinar or event attendance, or other documented evidence as identified in CPD categories and points table.
I submitted CPD points, but it is not reflecting on My CPD records, why is that?
Another common reason for points that you have submitted not reflecting on your records is that the date was not within the award period. All activities logged for CPD points must fall within the award period of your certification.
For example: If you were awarded certification on 11 June 2025, you cannot record CPD points for a conference you attended on 5 March 2024.
Who assigns CPD points for AIPM™ events, including webinars and the AIPM™ Conference?
- You will need to upload your CPD points yourself.
- You will need to record all CPD points from AIPM™ YouTube videos yourself.
- For the AIPM™ Conference, you will need to manually log your CPD points and retain your receipt as evidence.
What happens to my CPD points after I recertify?
When you recertify, your CPD status will reset to zero and you will need to log 70 CPD points across the new three-year term.
